Hi John,

GearVox will require an update in order to work properly on Vista. I don't have a date yet but I will post in the announcements section of the GearVox forum when a test copy is ready.

-Regards,
Hi, I'm afraid I misread your first question. GearVolt cannot access the name of the folder in the split function. It sounds like a reasonable idea, but it will have to come in an update to GearVolt. The split parameters that I gave you are looking in the album tag not the folder so GearVolt was trying to stuff "Strength" into the year...thus the error message.

If I understand you, you have a folder structure that has the year embedded and you would like to add this year to your mp3 files? You can do this manually one year at a time, kinda tedious but it will work. Drag each year separately into GearVolt. In any row, type the year into GearVolt. Press F6 to fill this year to all the tracks that you dragged into GearVolt. Apply your updates if you a satisfied that the fill went correctly. Repeat for each year. Hope this helps.
So I tried that, but...

My first folder is: 38 Special
My subfolder is: 1986 Strength In Numbers
My first song is: 01 - Somebody Like You.mp3

Currently the +Name is: 01 - Somebody Like You.mp3
the +Artist is: 38 Special
the +Album is: Strength in Numbers
the +Title is: Somebody Like You
and the +Track is: 1

When I highlight the subfolder and select Source Column as Album and enter <Year>\s<Album> for Tag Expression and click Split, I see Stre in the Year field and [Data size exceeded for column: <Year>] next to Tag Expression.

I can't seem to get it to split using 1989 for Year and Album Name for Album. How can i do that without renaming all of them to 1989 - Album Name? tx

Hi, you should be able to do this by keying off of the whitespace after the year instead of the "-" character. Try this if your album names start with the year. Set your Source Column to "Album" and your Tag Expression to <Year>\s<Album>
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I'll try it with fewer files. I'd like to use this to manipulate some of my MP3s... I DJ with them and they are all 256k ripped from CD files.

I'll try smaller batches...

Thanks,

Hi Milt,

It sounds like you have hit the memory limit of GearVolt. 70k songs would be 4 80G Ipods by Apple's measure. A future incarnation of GearVolt may be designed to handle large playlists but as you noted, the current beta can't. Sorry. I take it you did not get an "Out of Memory" error message. I will add a warning/confirmation dialog to GearVolt to prevent attempting to load large lists. Thanks for taking the time to report this problem.

You can still use GearVolt, but in smaller chunks. Try dropping fewer songs, a lot fewer. You can drag and drop songs directly out of iTunes as well as from folders.

Regards,
Author: Mark Worthington
Subject: Re: GearVolt, Drag & Drop m3u files ...
Topic Replies: 2

Robert,

Sorry, I guessed that m3u files were audio files! (and would therefore be processed). Now that you've explained what's going on, it's clear what I should do.

I reckon that as GearVolt natively supports only mp3 files, it would be best to change the wording accordingly. Is the purpose of this option to force any m3u playlist to be ignored?

Robert Wahler wrote:

I primarily use GearVolt to manage ID3 tags so I had not noticed the problem. Mostly I drag files from iTunes' playlists into GearVolt or drag just MP3 files from the Explorer.

Ah! The main thing for me is that my player needs to have the mp3 files transferred in a particular manner if I want them played in the right order … it also supports Albums/Tracks ….which is why I use GearVolt MP3 in the first place! Using Windows Explorer just transfers them alphabetically.

No, the current behaviour is not a problem now I know what's going on.

Cheers,

Mark
